I have an iPhone X and decided it merits a bit more hands-on before I Officially Provide Takeaway in Article Form. A few initial thoughts...
The size—a skosh bigger than an iPhone 8–is one of the X’s defining factors. This isn’t for people who like ginormous, tablet-like phones.
With about three. exceptions, Face ID has worked for me, and worked well. And after I got the knack, I didn’t have to give it much thought.
(Those who were sure Face ID would be awful because facial-recognition security is always awful were wrong.)
The notch doesn’t bug me as long as apps are iPhone X-friendly, but many apps are currently glitchy on the new screen size.
I only miss the home button, a little, when I pull up the app switcher—that gesture is tough to master.
Animojis are nifty, one of Apple’s best new pieces of software in eons. Always great when the company makes something to show off new tech.
The OLED screen is nice and vivid without departing from Apple’s taste in displays, and HDR video looks terrific.
I noticed more minor software glitches with the X than with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
Having used the X, I’m mostly impressed, but feel strongly that some people will prefer the 8 or 8 Plus’s familarity.
The fact that the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus exist has given Apple the liberty to push boundaries with the X, and that’s good.
I need to use the cameras more, but the improved front-facing camera and OIS on the rear telephoto camera are noticeable and nice.
In the immortal words of David S. Pumpkins, any questions?
