Oh boy, I feel another RANT coming on... It's NOV & can we talk about HOW MANY MOVIES that are considered serious have MEN on the poster? 1/

And, yes, it's personal. The film I made with @lilycollins and @alexandersharp, @unfoRETTAble @carriepreston and other amazing humans, 2/

called #ToTheBone streaming on @Netflix got an AMAZING reception at Sundance and sold for 8 Million bucks, one of the highest $$ amounts 3/

paid at the festival. We had a qualifying in LA. From all the reports the film has over-performed in many categories. And YET... 4/

we seem not to be part of awards conversation this year. WHY does this piss me off? Well, I do like to wear fancy dresses and look at... 5/

famous people. Like, which star has bacne or a HUGE head on a tiny body is kind of endlessly fascinating to me. I love that stuff. I am.. 6/

and forever will be a FAN of films and TV. Stories saved my life. Awards, however, don't mean much to me except as a way to signal our... 7/

myopic industry that one is "relevant" and deserves more cash to make more movies. And the dress. I really like a pretty dress. And... 8/

hoping to meet someone cool like @kumailn or his wife or like that. But I repeat myself. The ANGER comes from this old idea that movies 9/

that focused on a woman in some kind of FEMALE TROUBLE might seem soft or icky (like an eating disorder) & can not move a person who is 10/

NOT a female. Even one who actually knows women or even one who has a WIFE or DAUGHTER. An OSCAR movie typically about a great MAN or by 11/

a great man. There are exceptions. I think... Right? But anybody who is not part of the ruling class is subject to this filter. And when 12/

somebody raises a stink you may get a few token winners, but I'm ready for movies about MOST of us matter more. To more of us. Stories 13/

matter. Seeing ourselves in stories matters. There are WAY more important jobs -- anybody in our military for instance. But stories help 14/

create EMPATHY and commonality and good God what do we need more of right now? The best review of #ToTheBone I got early on was from a 15/

agent who read it and said "I always thought eating disorders were about vanity. Now I feel enlightened. And oh, yeah -- it's funny" 16/

Remember 50/50 with the wonderful @Sethrogen and some other cute kid? I was going for a tone in that world. I feel like that got taken 17/

more seriously. The events of past few months in my industry have made me want to SAY this stuff. Taking nothing from other WONDERFUL 18/

works of art. But fuck. Just because a movie focuses on people WITH vaginas instead AT vaginas, does that mean I don't get a new dress? 19/

And yes, HIDDEN FIGURES. But there have been many "great person behind the also great person" movies. Not so much with Eating Disorders. 20/

Unless it's LIFETIME FOR VAGINAS.
