Yesterday, the #KeystonePipeline cracked and dumped 210,000 gallons of oil onto South Dakota prairie. Here’s the reason the pipeline burst... gregpalast.com/pig-burst-keys… #KeystoneXL #KeystoneSpill #NoKXL
The PIG (Pipeline Inspection Gauge) that is sent through the #KeystonePipeline to check for evidence of any weakness didn’t squeal a warning. Why not? Because, the PIG has been silenced — its software jacked and hacked gregpalast.com/pig-burst-keys… #KeystoneSpill
Note: We've obtained independent confirmation of this from not one, not two, but THREE software engineers who designed the PIG "warning" system gregpalast.com/pig-burst-keys… #KeystoneXL #KeystonePipeline #KeystoneSpill #NoKXL
Pipeline Inspection Gauge software is deliberately set to reduce the warning signals and thereby cut the costs of replacement and repair by billions of dollars on the #KeystoneXL and other pipelines! gregpalast.com/pig-burst-keys… #KeystonePipeline #KeystoneSpill #NoKXL
This week, Nebraska will decide on whether to approve an extension of the #KeystonePipeline which will carry the oil down to Texas. Oil to Texas?! Texas is drowning in oil. So why a dangerous pipeline to bring oil from Canada to Texas? The answer: Koch gregpalast.com/behind-keyston…
Federal law requires that the oil industry run a diagnostic robot PIG, a Pipeline Inspection Gauge, that will squeal when something is wrong. But PIGs are only as good as the software that analyzes their signals. And the software used by #BigOil has been compromised—deliberately.
Insiders told this reporter that the software was designed to fool the safety inspectors: "The software feeds them incorrect information about the state of their pipeline." gregpalast.com/pig-burst-keys… #KeystonePipeline #KeystoneSpill #NoKXL
Originally, our source thought that the flawed PIG software was an error—so he tried to fix it to meet the standards of the law. But the error was deliberately left in place "because the software would increase the liability that a pipeline operator would.. have to deal with."
With the PIG calibrated to the danger sensitivity required by law, oil and gas companies would have to dig up, inspect and replace pipe at a cost of millions per mile. That’s not what the oil companies wanted from the contractor that designed their PIG program. #KeystoneSpill
Big Oil's happy with a "smart PIG" that's real stupid, because the dumber the PIG, the less sensitive the software, the more they save. Sometimes, the industry quietly skips the "pigging" altogether. #KeystoneSpill #NoKXL gregpalast.com/pig-burst-keys…
Making the diagnostic software less sensitive is like pulling the battery out of a smoke alarm. God forbid you have a fire. But in the case of the PIG, it's not just dangerous, it's illegal. gregpalast.com/pig-burst-keys… #KeystoneSpill #NoKXL
...And the danger of a muzzled PIG goes beyond #KeystoneXL gregpalast.com/the-pig-in-the… #KeystoneSpill #NoKXL
