Hackers were pretty hardcore back in the day. This one group appears to have doxxed tens of thousands of people at a time, printed out their info, and sent bound copies of the pastebin to everyone in town.
I sure am learning a lot about the 20th century politics & economics of phone books.
In all seriousness are there any good books written about the genesis & controversies of phone books? Seems like some of discomfort around them foreshadowed controversies around services like Google Street View, LeakSource, etc.

In May of this year the hackers sent him a message that (badly) mimicked an event photography service, sending him a link to what were apparently pictures of him at a recent event. That’s Ali in the picture below, holding the microphone. 🎤

Here’s the thing: That photo isn’t publicly available. You wouldn’t get it by doing a Google image search for Ali, for example.

The phishing message doesn’t make it clear, but Ali said the pics came from a Feb. 1 event at @AEI, the DC think tank.

Something that I've been working on quietly but which the indictment probably makes moot: the Secureworks list had several Fancy Bear email addresses which the group used for self-testing.
How I found this out: Fancy Bear generated malicious links in batches. But between these waves of activity they would sometimes generate 1-4 malicious links, often connected to weird-sounding email addresses.

Six years ago, we ran a WAR HERO FORMER REPUBLICAN SURGEON GENERAL who had a life story so crazy inspiring that I thought it had to be fake when I first got approached about joining his campaign (it’s not, he’s legit in every way and I loved working for him)
We put everything into that race, and outperformed basically all expectations…and we still fell 4 points short. We were APPLAUDED at the time for getting that close…and we lost by 180,000 voters!!!

Reading a forthcoming book called Hitler's American Friends.

It's about the America First Committee and will probably be a worthwhile read when it comes out.

There was a lot of infighting about tone -- think alt-lite vs. alt right.
People like Charles Lindbergh were the ones who drummed up the most support for the movement. Because of their openly anti-Semitic views.

There was apparently a lot of fighting between people like Lindbergh & people who thought they should promote fascism with a friendlier tone
And there was a disinformation campaign. Apparently Americans were told that Roosevelt was secretly Jewish and had changed his name from "Rosenfeld." Wow. I did not know this.

I've made a practice of not publicly calling out Esther Crawley in part because the issues we face are so much bigger than any one researcher.
And because I think I still entertain a fantasy of one day sitting down to lunch with her and saying, "woman, if you mean as well as you say you do, what on earth are you doing?"
I'm also uncomfortable with personalizing scientific disagreement. I think good science does eventually win out (even if it takes decades) and that disagreement and radically different POVs are important, constructive, and worth defending.
