Thread on #IranProtests
1) Iran protests continue despite #IRGC announcement claiming the opposite four days ago. On Saturday the 6th of January there were large protests in 8 cities but on Sunday the first wave of protests stopped and the second wave has now started.
2) In some provinces (including in Hormozgān, ilam, Khuzestan etc) workers are now protesting by joining others in the cross country strikes, people are not paying their bills and Iranians are taking out their money from their bank accounts.
3) The aim is to cut the regime’s financial resources which it uses to fund its security forces, the very who have confronted protesters and killed 39 people in the past twelve days.
4)The reason for the second wave is a change of tactics because the regime managed to crackdown on the young protesters on the streets in most parts of the country. They did this by shutting down the internet in some parts of the country, slowing down the speed of it in the most
5)parts and blocking Telegram altogether for now. Nevertheless many families continue to protest in front of the prisons across the country. In this second wave, we have not received any reports showing protests in Iran up to this moment. However, young people have started a
6)campaign writing anti-regime slogans on the walls and distributing leaflets.
Also, many students who were forced to participate in pro-regime rallies, decided to chant on their way home what the majority have been chanting for the past few days: Death to(down with) Khamenei.
7)However,the first eleven days of protests were only the beginning and many reporters on the ground believe it will continue.I spoke to a few students who didn’t take part in the protests and they told me that the situation's not going to continue like before&people won't stop
8)At the same time officials claim that they have only arrested 1800 people but independent reporters claim the number to be closer to 3200. Yesterday officials announced that prisons in Tehran are full and they are sending prisoners to other cities
9)Security forces have arrested 6 teenagers aged 13,14,15 and16 and informed their families of this but they have now informed their families that they still have one of the 15 year olds but don’t know where the others are. Other prisoners are also missing at this time.
10)In two cases security forces tortured prisoners to death and have called the families to come and get their children’s bodies. In Dezful one of the families has seen marks of torture on the body. As we reported before, the level of tortures have increased and
11)they are using the most inhumane methods in order to make prisoners lie in front of the TVs so they can accuse the USA etc. Security forces are asking some families to give money in order to see the release of their children and some have been asked to pay an amount of $70K
12)(a few wealthy families) and lower amounts for others. However, university students’ organisations have warned the government to release the prisoners without any pre-conditions before they lose patience. It is unlikely that the regime will release prisoners without torture,
13) fake confessions and harsh conditions. Some university students will never -even after their release- be able to continue their studies. In this case, we could see more anger but this time with more violence in the next few weeks.
14)If Iranians manage to challenge the regime’s forces economically then more people will join and more police and army forces will join protesters. According to our verified reports from six banks, rich people have already started to take their money out and sell their shares.
15) And a tanker carrying Iranian oil and run by the country’s top oil shipping firm was burned yesterday, Iranian officials believe it was worth £32m(eghtesadonline.com/fa/tiny/news-2…) but
16) other sources believe worth about $60 million(reuters.com/article/us-chi…) and on the other hand the so-called moderate government led by Rouhani prohibited English lessons in primary schools in order to counter the 'cultural invasion' in Iran.
