A short thread about holes and idiots:

1/
When I teach my students about negotiation, I do one session on more practical tips (rather than the big theory stuff), mainly because it's easier to relate to

2/
So we work through a series of points on the PowerPoint, including one that says "holes and idiots"

3/
I ask the class if they know any sayings about either of these things.

They usually don't. Which says something about either their education or mine

4/
So I explain that "when you're in a hole, stopping digging"

5/
Sometimes you make a mistake or a misstep. Rather than blag your way out there and then, it's better to first just stop and regroup.

6/
And then I explain that "it's better for people to think you're an idiot, then for you to open your mouth and have them know you're an idiot"

7/
It's easier to try to fill the silences (and risk making unforced errors), then to hold back (and maybe convey the impression that you're holding your wise counsel)

8/
Put together, the message I try to share with the students is that sometimes less is more and that you should only add when you can add something constructive.

Also, that I know sayings.

9/
Any way, just a random thought on this fine morning, which you can apply to any situation you wish
