I don’t speak for all women in crypto, but I speak for myself on this thread. I work full time in the space, been going to btc meetups since 2013, and I have never once felt undermined or underestimated by my (yes, mostly male) peers.
In fact, it’s quite the opposite. I’m non-technical, yet men in crypto usually assume I’m a dev and engage me in deeply technical conversations.
These men have spent countless hours answering patiently and thoughtfully answering questions. Never patronizing. Know why? Because they are all learning as they go too.
This NY Times article lumps them into trash alongside the ICO hype boys. There is a clear distinction that reporters lack when it comes to this culture divide.
No one legit in this industry positions themselves as experts. We are building this shit from the ground up, and it’s incredibly inspiring to see the exchange of knowledge in this space.
I’ve worked in more “traditional” tech, with startups in NYC and SF and found that culture way more oppressive as a woman. The VC-come-on, the bullshit mansplaining, the endless posturing. It’s so tired and we see the results it has had in SF.
The recent Silicon Valley-fication of crypto is the problem. But that’s the beautiful thing about crypto, it undermines the power dynamic that those bros set up. Crypto is our way out.
We are here (yes, women too), doing the work. We are not, nor have ever been, interested in lazy media narratives and political agendas. We deserve better than this.
