This. Industrial agriculture and forestry has diminished animals so much where I come from. I cannot see most animals my parents and grandparents used to see. And it seems this is a problem on a global scale combined with pollution and land loss.
This does not only affect the animals but also the humans. I'm sure you've heard about bees dying, so that we now grow bumblebees on an industrial scale and artificially pollinate plants.
Agriculture as is, destroys our wildlife, pollutes water, leads to soil erosion and nutrient loss and generally works against instead of with nature.
In fact the nutrient loss of our soil is so bad, that there isn't enough supply of vitamin B12 anymore, which is produced by bacteria in the soil. We are feeding pigs supplements so that humans don't lack B12!
We can't keep this way of doing agriculture much longer, yet it isn't talked about enough. Organic farming, generally spoken, is not the solution here as it just aims at lessening the problem.
What we need is a real alternative, where farming is a part of the natural circles in nature. Where farming doesn't destroy nature but enriches it.
A solution could be permaculture. Practiced by a small, but growing circles of farmers, it's philosophy is to observe the natural circles and make use of them.
If done right, permaculture requires less care (as the natural processes work for you, instead of you against them), leads to higher yields per acre and instead of dimishing, increases biodiversity and strengthens nature.
We need to change. And we need to change quick. There has already been so many animals diminshed and natural spaces lost.
