Good morning,

I made a viz using @ShutdownLine 's incredible data to show defensemen exits vs entry defense.

You can filter for your team here: public.tableau.com/profile/sean.t…
Here's a highlighted view of the best at both measures (and the other members of their teams).

Doughty, Karlsson, Subban, Gostisbehere, and McAvoy look very strong. Leddy, Werenski, Manson, and Carlson are great too.
Manson continues to look nifty in all phases.
Hjalmarsson is king of the old-school "glass-and-out" and we get a nice stats-y representation of that here.
McAvoy elite e5.
Sabres might benefit from an experienced former puck-mover behind the bench. Someone who can teach the defensemen to control the blue line.
Good and fun but it's all for naught when you have no goaltending.
In good, Cbj has Werenski annnnnd Nutivaara.
Traditionally, this has been an area of strength for Brodie.
It's like everyone quit on Keith this year.
Note: Franson is dull. DEF in dull are /good/ at preventing entries. So, he's a positive shot-share defender with offense who guards the line well. Just noting that.
I like Girard.
Klingberg is another fun perception vs reality type. Like a mini-Karlsson, you can be great offensively and still decent-good-capable-strong defensively...even if it doesn't look like you have to work extra hard.
Kronwall is fun!
Gryba's who they thought Russell was and vice versa.
Ekblad snuck into the "good" quad.
Another thing that Doughty is really good at.
Shutdown defender Nate Prosser.
Weber was fun and the departed Jerabek was Mtl's only "good" defender here.
The Vatanen deal was a good one, I think.
Subban is:
- great by counting stats
- great by microstats
- an incredible philanthropist
- handsome and charismatic

Sounds like a slam dunk face-of-the-NHL type, no?
Leddy and 5ebastian look great.
McDonagh and Lundqvist did everything they could but this is a horrible group of defensemen.
Karlsson.
Defensive liability GhostBear.
This is ungood. As an aside, it's interesting how certain players earn reputations for being good defensive defensemen regardless of actual performance.
Sharks are very average.
A conservative coach's dream: you're either good or don't do anything.
Fairly middling results considering Tbl is such a great team.
To no one's surprise, this has not been an area of strength for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
<insert Ben Hutton thesis here>
Colin Miller's had a really nice year.
Not great but nice spot for Morrisey and at least Kulikov's keeping things dull.
Wsh must do something very well setting up exits because everyone looks great and even Orpik is league-average.
A reminder -- Sznajder hand-tracks this data. He's an incredible contributor to the hockey stats community and you can support his work here: patreon.com/CSznajder/post…
