/ Often we hear this from Brexiteers - "EFTA/EEA sounds good; except for Free movement of people"
/ and it's true that the efta/EEA countries are signed up to the "4 freedoms" (although there is more emphasis on free movement of *workers* in the EEA Agreement):
/ and we have discussed before how we could better regulate EU migration after Brexit as an efta/EEA state: efta4uk.eu/fom-and-the-ee…
/ but the critical thing is, when you really drill down into it, even ardent Brexiteers aren't really opposed to free movement, just perceived or actual *abuses* of free movement.
/ they still want to be able to live work, study and retire in the EU and broadly accept that these rights should be reciprocal. But that there should be controls.
/ The EEA agreement allows members to block citizens from the EU or other EFTA states from residing in their countries:

“On grounds of public policy, public security or public health” – Article 28 EEA Agreement
/ there are millions of law abiding, productive EU citizens in the UK and many UK citizens living in the eu27. Surely if the UK rejoined EFTA and maintained EEA membership we could get a sensible joint declaration on migration issues to allay everyone's concerns?
/ this wouldn't be cakeism or exceptionalism, simply a desire for existing rules to be restated and where necessary; beefed up. Nothing earth shaking. It could be simply done as an additional protocol to the EEA agreement. Voila, there you have it, Brexit problems solved. /End.
