Controversial thought: MPs shouldn't be handling Brexit. 1/ #brexit
/ While many MPs are gifted and talented individuals, few seem to have the required skills and knowledge to take brexit forward.
/ it is a mammoth task that requires knowledge of EU law, treaties and institutions, international trade and customs, international bodies, international law and more.
/ When Mrs May became PM, she shouldn't have adopted *any* redlines, or invoked Article 50. She should have set up a Brexit panel of experts to report on the best route out of the EU, with a phased implementation plan.
/ She should not have taken any action until the panel's report was completed and digested. She could then have challenged the Leader of the opposition to back the official plan, or risk looking partisan and foolish.
/ Instead, she accepted the 'Red Lines' as dictated by her advisor Nick Timothy then invoked Article 50 before she (or anyone else) was ready politico.eu/list/brexit-40…
/ Without an independent panel of experts, Government has been subject to the influence of Matthew Elliott and his network of hard-brexit supporters.
/ As detailed here and discussed by @shahmiruk : desmogblog.com/2018/07/23/map…
/ The UK could have gone for any range of Brexit options after the referendum, but each red line fed to the PM by Timothy and Elliott's network - No ECJ ❌ No EFTA ❌No Customs Union ❌No EEA ❌No FoM ❌reduced our options further.
/ Ultimately, she (the PM) allowed herself to be backed into a corner. Her proposals will find little support amongst remainers, soft leavers or hard leavers. /End "For of all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these: 'It might have been!'"
