@NicholasGuyatt @etymologic @clem1768 Exactly that. I can dig out how many institutions responded with 'prefer sectionslisation' in the sept consultation responses. There were many. So Cambridge not alone in trying to break the pot. I'll get back to you
@NicholasGuyatt @etymologic @clem1768 Of 29 known consultation responses, 15 are in favour of sectionalisation. This includes 8 colleges (Brasenose and Pembroke in Oxford, Jesus, Fitzwilliam, Hughes Hall, St Catherine's, Lucy Cavendish, King's in Cambridge). 1/
@NicholasGuyatt @etymologic @clem1768 Note: Not all USS employers were FOId, so the sample is skewed towards Oxbridge colleges. 2/
@NicholasGuyatt @etymologic @clem1768 But interesting to note that Cambridge and colleges were *very strong* advocates for sectionalisation, going beyond the Oxford's response: 'the possibility of sectionalisation needs to be investigated'. 3/
@NicholasGuyatt @etymologic @clem1768 The rest: Birmingham: It is our view that individual employers should have greater flexibility in future in respect of the retirement benefits they wish to offer employees as part of overall remuneration packages. 4/
@NicholasGuyatt @etymologic @clem1768 LSE: If future pension provision is on a DC only basis, the School would like to have full flexibility to design its own contribution structure. 5/
@NicholasGuyatt @etymologic @clem1768 Lancaster: opportunity to pause and reflect on whether we need to change our whole approach to pensions and support a Package of reforms which offer differentiated choices to staff depending on the stage of their life/career. 6/
@NicholasGuyatt @etymologic @clem1768 Bristol: Removal of exclusivity would reduce risks from future accrual if the scheme remains open and provides employers and employees with greater choice. And: Individual employers could determine the level of sickness benefits that they would underwrite themselves 7/
@NicholasGuyatt @etymologic @clem1768 Bangor: ‘We would like the structure having flexibility between and within institutions to tailor the right package to the post/individual.’ 8/
@NicholasGuyatt @etymologic @clem1768 I find this last suggestion particularly invidious because it means that staff at the same institution end up with widely different pensions. 'Research star' = 'look at our great pension benefits'; all others = 'here are a few per cent for your DC'. 9/
@NicholasGuyatt @etymologic @clem1768 Overall, it's impossible to say whether Oxbridge's sectionalisation drive precipitated the crisis, since we don't have all 116 responses (we should put in more FOI requests). Others certainly gunning for it too. 9/9
