Chamba Kailash or the Manimahesh Kailash is a much revered peak in Manimahesh Ranges of Himachal Pradesh. Like the Kailash Manasarovar in Tibet, it is believed that this peak can't be climbed. However that's not true.
In 1968, an Indo-Japaense team tried to climb this peak. Whether they succeeded or not, remained a controversial topic for many years. Harish Kapadia, the then Chief Editor of The Himalayan Journal didn't believe that this peak was climbed at all.
17 years later, in 1985 Shuya Sekiguchi from Japan who was either related to the team or was a member of the climbing team , wrote to Harish kapadia and it was established that Chamba Kailash had indeed been climbed.
That correspondence makes for an interesting read

The 1968 climb was published in Himalayan Mountaineering Institute Darjeeling's Journal. So I tried to get a copy of the same. HMI folks didn't respond to my emails or phone calls. So eventually I had to file an RTI
In response to my RTI, HMI outrightly refused that they never published HMI Journals from 1965 to 1970. I even received a call from HMI and the guy I talked to said that journals were never published in those years.
And guess what. Harish Kapadia Sir called me yesterday and gave me this. HMI 1968 Journal exists.
So did HMI lie? I hope they know what it means to lie under RTI Act 2005..Let's file a First appeal and we will get to know 😎😎
