One of the Oracle's broad crystalline surfaces shimmered, and the useless translator cheerily displayed "LAUGH" on the small screen.
"Have you ever considered the cosmology of a goldfish?" came the voice from nowhere, in that perfectly human neutral voice. Showoff.
The Foundation spent millions and years building software to translate those iridescent flashes, trying to unlock the Oracle's knowledge. And then the first time it replied, it did so in fluent spoken English.

TLDR: it looks like all the different tips & tricks for leading the player can be boiled down to just two underlying principles:
- Affordances
- Saliency (Attention)

Affordances: what the player can do. Eg. open doors.
Perceived affordances: what it looks like the player can do. Eg. steps look climbable.
Signifiers: arbitrary signals that communicate affordances. E.g. yellow painted ledges.

Two types:
- Bottom up attention is stimulus driven. eg. loud noises
- Top down attention is goal driven. eg. car shapes crossing a road

What we pay attention to is a varying mix of both depending on context

One more one more thing: It is not at all unusual for panels at Worldcon to include people who have no idea what they're talking about, so it's not like there is a lot of careful consideration involved.
I've been on panels with people who:

a. suggested that new writers contact a patent lawyer to read contracts
b. wondered aloud if invisible ink wasn't "a kind of magical realism"
c. declared on a "What Came Out This Year" panel that they'd "read nothing new at all this year."
Also people who:

d. followed up on a comment about Heinlein's Rules of Writing with "Well, here are MY rules" and then repeated Heinlein's Rules verbatim
e. ran off the panel on experimental literature but stayed in the audience to talk about group sex with her "water brothers"

One of the world’s most incredible ruins is also one of its most mysterious: The ancient Gorgan Wall.

For nearly 1,000 years, this was the longest & mightiest border wall ever built. It was twice as long as Hadrian's Wall, & its construction is an unsolved mystery to this day.
Golestan Province in Northern Iran is a unique landscape.

Between the temperate forests of the Alborz Mountains & the shores of the Caspian Sea, a fertile plain stretches for over 200km, forming a narrow corridor between Persia & the wide desert steppes of Central Asia.
For centuries, this was the northern border of one of the world’s first superpowers: the Sassanian Empire.

The Empire was Persian. It ruled a vast stretch of the Ancient Near East for 400 years, from the 3rd century until its fall to Muslim conquerors in the 7th.

One of the strangest stories of a ruined site I’ve ever come across is the one behind the Roman Temple of Augustus in Windsor, England.

That’s because if you came here at the beginning of the 1800's, it wouldn't be there at all.
In fact, these ruins originated 2,000 miles away, in Libya.

The story of how they ended up in Windsor takes us back to the heyday of the British Empire & to the ancient world of Roman Libya. It shows how the imperial mind imagined ruins of the past & plundered its dominions.
The story began on the coast of Libya in 1816. A British officer, Colonel Hanmer Warrington, visited the Roman ruins of Leptis Magna with artist Augustus Earle.

The sight struck them both. Earle even painted this watercolour, showing the sand dunes rolling over the stones.
