Women dominated industries like service or care work are less likely to provide health insurance

CA Dems declined to endorse @SenFeinstein for senate this past weekend calling for "new blood." Before we dismiss the 84 year old senator who broke gender barriers by becoming the first woman senator from California, let's look at Dianne Feinstein's long history #ImWithDianne
Dianne Feinstein began her career in 1970 when she was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. She was the 1st female president of the board in 1978 when Mayor Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were assassinated. Feinstein discovered Milk's & and announced his death
Feinstein succeeded Moscone as Mayor of San Francisco as the 1st woman to hold that position. In 1992 Feinstein & Barbara Boxer were elected to the senate on the same ballot. They were the 1st women CA senators. In 2012 she claimed the record for the most popular votes w/ 7.75m

I was born & raised in Chicoral, Colombia. A tiny town in the middle of the Andes Cordillera.
I attended Nuestra Señora del Rosario school, located in Espinal, 15Km away from Chicoral. Due to the high heat by noon, all schools start really early back home. This meant, I had to wake up at 5am to attend school every morning since I was 4 years old. #VoicesIWS
I did well in math and science in elementary and high school, so I chose to study clinical microbiology. Although coming from a low-middle income family, I was able to attend university, thanks to my parents’ effort to prioritize education over other commodities. #VoicesIWS

The US has the highest maternal mortality rates of any industrialized country, and steadily climbing. American women are 3 times as likely to die during the maternal period as Canadian women. In the U.K., it’s so low that men are more likely to die while their partner’s pregnant.
And within the US there’s a huge racial divide. African American women are four times more likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth complications than white women. We don’t track this issue on a federal level, so it’s hard to definitively identify cause. But some obvs factors:
1. Lack of access to birth control doesn’t allow women to plan pregnancies, especially women with high-risk medical conditions. Half of pregnancies in the US are unplanned; this adds stress to domestic relationships and cause problems at work. Birth control is healthcare.

Self-proclaimed “pro-lifers” who think women should be forced to carry unwanted pregnancies to term act like pregnancy and childbirth are a breeze and exist without significant medical risks. That is both untrue and harmful. 2/
