July 4th has come and gone, and, with it, all remaining illusions that travel will reopen between Europe and the US. As I have shared in this @washingtonpost article, this policy is only causing hardship. 1/
Since I started writing on the issue, European officials, as well as Europeans under travel ban, have repeatedly professed their faith that travel will reopen “soon,” that reciprocity is “around the corner,” that “Americans will realize the policy doesn’t make sense anymore.” 2/
“You’ll see, Joe Biden will announce it before his European tour in June.” He didn’t. “You know, Sec Blinken will address it when he visits Italy for G20.” He hasn’t. “Come on, Biden is just waiting for his own July 4th deadline, and then he will lift the ban”.
He. Did. Not.

Breaking: EU VP @MargSchinas says the Commission got tough with the United States in talks yesterday, demanding reciprocity on ending #TravelBans.

"They were receptive...so we’re hopeful we will have good news on that soon," he says. "It's now up to them"
#LoveIsNotTourism
"We very much insisted that the ‘America is back’ narrative and the revival of the transatlantic partnership should not be reserved to politicians, officials, diplomats and generals," Schinas says.

#Biden must also restart people-to-people contacts.
"We told them Europe is the most vaccinated continent in the world today," says Schinas. "We have in record time produced an EU #Covid19 certificate that testifies in a very accurate way that a traveller is not a risk to others."

(US doesn't have a national vaccine certificate)

Thread: So @ukhomeoffice @UKHomeSecretary - thought you might like to hear this. An 80-year-old UK citizen (my dad) is on day 6 of a hotel quarantine stay at the Courtyard @Marriott at Gatwick: cost £2400. Both him and my mom have been vaccinated. Two negative Covid tests. /1
They are being fed btw 9pm and 9.30 despite requesting dinner at 7pm. Walks are hit and miss. They have had vegetables twice so far. Chicken the only protein 6 days in a row. Curry for 4 out of 5 options, including kids meals. Fruit salad: see pic (full portion). @ukhomeoffice Image
This is diabolical treatment - quarantiners are not here on holiday, and are being detained in disgusting circumstances, and at great expense. Why is this acceptable? Why are they being treated like detainees? @ukhomeoffice @MarriottIntl Image

That Europe extensively debated when and how to end ban on 🇺🇸 tourists, while most Americans aren’t even aware they’ve had a ban on European tourists, is a reflection of how much more important international tourism is to Europe.

But it also shows how self-absorbed 🇺🇸 media is.
There have been TONS of articles in the US about when and how vaccinated Americans can travel to Europe this summer.

None mention that America isn’t reciprocating and vaccinated Europeans are still banned from entering the US. As if it’s irrelevant.
This is the American media’s view of Europe: a playground for vacations.

Not a real place with real people who are being banned from seeing their friends and family in the US.

Not a continent of equals who are owed fair treatment. Not a partner, but rather a giant museum.

(2/20) Ignore the fact that she had to pay for a PCR test in the states as well as book her flight here (1000$) as this is expected and respected during these times of a pandemic.
(3/20) Ignore the fact that she had to be on the phone for 5 hours and and book a mandatory hotel stay at a designated government approved hotel. (1300$)

After seeing a bunch of well-meant but increasingly irritating advice that some of us, the #loveisnottourism - communitiy, received & still receives, I decided to share something too.
Why can't we just break up with those partners and move on and make everybody's life easier?
Why are we insisting on making our own lives hell?

Maybe this will shed some light: Have you ever gone through a breakup but you did not want to? That you did not feel relieved but broken?
This is, to some extend, what we've been dealing with for more than 7 months.
Quote:
"Studies [say] the same areas in the brain that light up in imaging scans when we break a leg are activated when we split up w/ our mate. As part of a reaction to a breakup our brain experiences the[ir] departure [..] in a similar way to that in which it registers physical pain.

I can relate so much.
Having a binational relationship is hard as it is, distance, cultural aspects & the little things in life, also if you plan 2 live together, one or both must make huge sacrifices.
My bf&I are frequently experiencing the same issues described in this thread.
It's beyond me why politicians like #Seehofer don't #changethegermanrules. The current workaround can't be easier than deleting two words. There can't be many people affected if @fdpbt only got ~300 mails. It looks like complete lack of compassion.
Please, people, be #decent.
