Most of us in the West recognise the criminal insanity of Putin's war against Ukraine & the lies he uses to justify it, but we shouldn't think ourselves immune to the same kind of madness, because we are not.
The Wests failure to instigate a #SustainabilityRevolution, the existential need for which has been apparent to many of us since the early 1970s, is also criminally insane. Only, we don't have a single Putin figure to blame. The blame is more collective, but focused on academia.
Why academia?
Because we look to academics as authorities in their supposed areas of expertise.
We expect social scientists to be authorities on understanding society, the state, & civilisation, but in truth they are as ignorant as medieval astronomers were of the heavens.

I welcome Eric's attempt to understand American society, although I can't really relate to it. It's no good leaving it to social scientists, who haven't a clue, despite it being their supposed area of academic expertise.
I too have put a lot of effort into trying to understand my own & closely related societies like America, i.e. the West, which are the only ones I know anything about.

Greta is my heroine: the child in the #HansChristianAndersen story of the Emperor's New Clothes, pointing out what those in positions of power & privilege are blind to, which in our case (& no fairytale) is that our civilisation is committing suicide.
Greta recognises our civilisation is committing suicide in failing to take #ClimateChange seriously enough, but I don't think she yet understands the underlying cause, as I do, being a lot older than her.

I've known that Western civilisation is committing suicide ever since realising that instead of facing up to the existential need for a #SustainabilityRevolution, it was sticking with a mercenary, rapacious, DRIVEN & thus inherently unsustainable global economy.
We were warned in the 1970's & opted definitively for #CivilisationalSuicide when the economy was put into super-global & turbo mode in the 1980s.
There was nothing I could do, but look on in horror, & try to understand this madness, which I now do. But no one's interested.

I remember, in the 1970s, when all were in awe of the photos of #SpaceshipEarth brought home by the Apollo astronauts, making clear its vulnerability, which our leaders, I was sure, would heed by initiating a #SustainabilityRevolution. Only, they never did. 
It was the same with immigration. I saw the London suburb of Wembley, where I was born in 1949, when it was 100% White, becoming ever more DIVERSE, & thought to myself, this is madness, which government will surely not allow to continue. Wembley is now about 12% White.
Quite recently I learned that the historian, A J Toynbee had remarked that all successful civilisations (like ancient Greece & Rome) ultimately commit suicide, which is clearly what Britain & the West are now doing.

A young & inexperienced man at the time, I expected our leaders & their academic advisors to rise to the challenge of instigating a #SustainabilityRevolution, but instead, as referred to in the quote I began this thread with, they put this economy into super-global & turbo mode.
I like George & agree with most of his political views, EXCEPT those on RACE, which he denies the importance, if not the very existence of. He despises his own race, not caring that Native Britons will soon be a racial minority in their ancestral homeland.

Despite having studied biology (I believe), he fails to view his own species from an evolutionary perspective, which is what one has to do, if one wants to understand society & its ills.

It sometimes makes me very angry, as I know it also makes many others, but if we give expression to our anger, we are accused of being xenophobic or RACIST, although my anger I do not direct at PoC, but at my fellow Whites who are imposing this madness on their OWN race.
But I do not allow this anger to consume me, 1) because it would do no good, & 2) because those responsible do not recognise the evil they are doing. Quite the contrary, they believe that they are doing good by opposing prejudice, which is how this ideology works.

But let's not put all the blame on governments, which have to get elected. No political party wanting to initiate a Sustainability Revolution could have won a single seat, let alone an election.

Society's failure to initiate a Sustainability Revolution 40 years ago was like someone ignoring their doctor's advice to cut back on their alcohol consumption, but increasing it instead. Our unsustainable economy was put into super-global & turbo mode, where it remains.
I think #DavidAttenborough, on behalf of his whole generation, owes #GretaThunberg & her generation an abject apology for having failed to instigate a #SustainabilityRevolution, the existential need for which has been apparent to many of us since the early 1970s.
I apologise for my own boomer generation, but it would be better coming from more influential individuals like #BillClinton, #BillGates & #TonyBlair. Only, they don't recognise the failure, or their co-responsibility for it, since that would tarnish their self-image.
These men & thousands like them, & a smaller number of women, who profited greatly from our unsustainable global economy, will almost certainly die in denial of their failings, as many, like #MargretThatcher & #HelmutSchmidt have already done.

Actually, it is not just what is wrong with our civilisation. It is what has caused every civilisation before our own to decline & fall, as ours will also do, very soon, unless we correct it. It represents a flaw in nature of the state itself.

My quest to understand why #NationStates, like Britain, instead of facing up to the existential need for a #SustainabilityRevolution in the 1970s & 80s, opted instead for ecocide, civilisational suicide & #WhiteSelfGenocide, led me to the following insights:
The trauma Ashkenazi Jews suffered at the hands of the Nazis resulted in many (subconsciously, if not consciously) hating, not just Nazis, but the entire European, i.e. White, race. Notwithstanding that, contrary to Nazi racial ideology, they themselves belong to the same race.
Given the nature of the state, this racial self-hatred was weaponised by #BigBrother & his minions as an instrument of socio-political rewards (for denying & despising one's own race), intimidation & control.
