“Nehru was a great democrat.”

“Didn’t he install his daughter as Congress party president, also dismiss the elected state government of Kerala in 1959 by abusing Article 356?”
“Nehru was a liberal.”

“Why did he reform personal laws only for Hindus in 1955, leaving India’s Muslims in the hands of religious conservatives?” livemint.com/Opinion/h953KJ…
“Nehru was for freedom of speech, he loved the arts.”

“Didn’t he kill free speech with the First Amendment, enunciating the reasonable restrictions standard? Didn’t he jail poet Majrooh Sultanpuri who happened to write critically about Nehru’s policies?”

“Nehru wrote beautiful letters to CMs, brought industrialization and promoted science.”

“He centralized enormous powers in Planning Commission run by a party apparatchik and dictated terms to CMs; nationalized industries; subsidized universities and neglected primary education.”
“Nehru cared about the poor and downtrodden, worked for masses.”

“He installed his family members in prominent ambassadorial and other posts. In 1954, his alleged lover Devika Rani was gifted 100 acres of land by the Mysore state government.”

“Hogwash. This is saffronization of history. You are a sanghi. Nehru did a lot for Indian science and our scientists.”

“😂👇 India’s first science Nobel laureate CV Raman on Nehru.”

“Despite his great power and unquestionable authority, Nehru was very modest and humble. ”

“How could he give himself the Bharat Ratna in 1955?”
1/ Amused but not surprised at the rage directed at me for generating this cognitive dissonance👇 in Nehru’s worshippers who chide others as “bhakts” 😀
2/ There is a section of mentally unwell, borderline deranged individuals - they are highly concentrated in Delhi’s media/policy circles - who suffer from Celebrity Worship Syndrome when it comes to Nehru (its how teenage girls feel for Justin Bieber).
3/ It takes cojones to say for a historical figure that “men wanted to be like him, women wanted to be with him” (“Nehru=James Bond” thesis), “he rode horses 😍” etc. Some people have an intense romantic attraction for Nehru. Questioning him is like attacking their lover.
4/ These are not random Twitter handles or ordinary people. Those gushing about Nehru like pubescent boys and girls are “serious” policy thinkers, published authors, star anchors, think-tank fellows.
5/ It helps that the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty / Congress party created an elaborate rewards system to glorify Nehru and other family members to the skies. The media/policy set are like Pavlovian dogs responding to the bell. They know how their bread is buttered.
