While Britain is trying to avoid a trade war with Trump, here's a little update on another much-punted post-Brexit alliance. Remember India?

Priti Patel said Brexit would be "a boost to India-UK ties".

The main thing Tories doesn't seem to understand: India isn't going to rush for a trade agreement with the UK without other benefits.

And what India wants, as I've repeatedly written, is better treatment of its people

In fact, the Indian PM recently dismissed a Memorandum of Understanding on immigration with the UK, because of visa issues

Then the UK *really* annoyed India this week, again, by keeping stringent requirements from Indian students...

How did Indians react?

An Indian official told me: "The message people are getting is, the UK is not interested in better relations with India."

Last night Liam Fox was supposed to try and smooth things over at this event

Instead, he blamed India for the student visa snub, saying the UK did it because India refused to sign the MoU over immigration.

So the UK is having trouble with trade AND immigration with India. And there's more.

There is growing anger amongst British Sikhs that Tories are saying little about Jagtar Singh Johal, the British Sikh who has been imprisoned for 6 months without charge or trial there.
Last week Johal's lawyer was denied entry by the UK Home Office. When asked, they refused to comment. Johal's lawyer and family blame British authorities.

Next time Theresa May goes to visit a British Sikh Gurdwara, she won't get an easy reception

I'm a strong and committed Remainer.

But I also think it's a mistake to force Jeremy Corbyn to commit to a second Referendum on Brexit. Labour members shouldn't go down that road.

Here's why:
If Corbyn says he is committed to a second Referendum *before* Theresa May's deal has been voted on, it will be a disaster.

Why? Two reasons:
First, May will immediately accuse him of helping the EU and trying to wreck Brexit. It will unite all Tories (ensuring her deal goes through).

Secondly, it will allow her to say Labour were always angling for No Deal, and are to blame from fallout of No Deal.

So this is Rod Liddle in the Spectator (apparently the *leading* magazine of the UK right), writing about how it's SO difficult to avoid being racist.

Let's talk about Rod Liddle's own history, since its not that well known.
In 2010, Rod Liddle blamed black people for "the overwhelming majority of street crime, knife crime, gun crime, robbery and crimes of sexual violence in London"

Ok. *deep breath* a thread on Labour and Brexit. ⬇️

As a strong Remainer I find it odd when fellow Remainers attack the Labour leadership (Corbyn / McDonnell) for not being against Brexit enough. Its unnecessary and misguided. Here's why
1) The Corbyn/McD stance is classic Triangulation. (Yes, the t-word is back!)

Of course they won't admit to it. But leadership don't want to lose the mostly working-class-vote that are strong Leavers. Will they attract Tory Remainers to replace them? Seems doubtful.
And the quickest way to annoy its Leavers is by telling them their vote didn't count.

For the Labour leadership, Brexit is not a concern as big as transforming the economy. THAT is the project they are building a coalition of voters for.

#brexit seems to be all about feeling over fact and this is especially true of the ReesMogg ERG faction of the Tory right.
I never bought the line that #brexit is about Democracy because most of the Tory right had zero enthusiasm for improving democracy in the UK few of them care about unelected house of lords the unfair FPTP electoral system or transparency on the contrary
Most of the Tory right are interested only in constitutional changes that suit them and if anything strive to be as little democratically accountable as possible.

Here follows a well crafted summary of the U.K. #Brexit position from the @guardian CIF section:
1. We are < 1% of global population (less without Scotland) To put things into perspective India produces more honours graduates than we produce kids.
2a. Without the economic muscle of the EU we do not have the means to get good trade agreements (Trade Agreements are staggeringly complex legal documents.
2b. Signing them is easy, getting a good one is the trick and that takes time, a team of knowledgeable and experienced negotiators and economic muscle, all which we don't have).
