Political communication again. There are two ways to read the tweet by the Italian Secretary of State (short thread)
1) The literal way: he threatens the North to get what he wants. As such, it’s a stupid tweet. The North has a simple solution. Close their borders. Any doubt that Kurz & Seehofer will do it?
A threat that has such an obvious solution is no threat. But I fear that’s not the strategy.
2) As propaganda. The camps abroad solution seems to be favoured by anyone anyway. The EU will throw money at it anyway. This is obvious and would happen with any Italian government
But with statements like these they can afterwards go back and claim ‘we did this’. They appear strong. And that’s what they want.
When Salvini breaks up the government he’ll be voted in as an effective strongman. It’s a lie, but it works.
Side effect: any Austrian, Swede, German reading the tweet will be less inclined to cooperate with these people. But finding solutions is not their forte anyway.
