Reminder to The Sun: during the EUref campaign, Jo Cox was murdered not at random by some random individual but by a man who shouted “keep Britain independent” as he stabbed her.
Very telling that The Sun suddenly wants to highlight the latent extremism of a fringe minority now that support for Brexit is unravelling but didn’t make a fuss about this tendency when they were getting their way. Excuse me if I see their concern now as cynical & opportunistic.
I guess my point is that The Sun shouldn’t so much be saying “Ooh we have to do Brexit otherwise there’ll be violence”: it should be saying (to a different set of ppl) “look guys, even if you don’t get your way, violence isn’t ok so cool it.”

John Rentoul is impressed with the quality of Michael Gove's piece defending May's Brexit deal. He loves this: "Does it deliver 100% of what I wanted? No. But then we didn’t win 100% of the vote on 23 June 2016." This sounds plausible but is in fact a completely bogus argument.
You can only justifiably invoke your electoral mandate delivered at the ballot box if you campaigned honestly & unambiguously. If Leave had offered a clear, unitary, achievable prospectus then 52% would mean something.
But they didn't. Leave *deliberately* set out to reel in voters by playing to a wide range of different and mutually incompatible expectations. That's how they cobbled together 52%.

Unpopular opinion: everybody outraged about Marr's behaviour towards Shami Chakrabarti but she fucked up & was naive. Use the "I voted Remain but I'm a democrat" line if you must* but "I'm a democrat, I don't know about you, Andrew" foolishly makes it about the interviewer. (1/3)

Juncker delivered his last #SOTEU2018 speech. Here are my major takeaways in a tweet #thread @CER_EU
1. As media had previously reported #Juncker decided not to focus on what his Commission achieved but on what still needs to be done to convince European citizens to say 'Yes' to the EU when they go to the polls next year.
2. I agree that it is not a good moment for pats on the back and I agree with #Juncker that member-states have in many respects held the Commission up from delivering on Commission's promises.
