John Rentoul is impressed with the quality of Michael Gove's piece defending May's Brexit deal. He loves this: "Does it deliver 100% of what I wanted? No. But then we didn’t win 100% of the vote on 23 June 2016." This sounds plausible but is in fact a completely bogus argument.
You can only justifiably invoke your electoral mandate delivered at the ballot box if you campaigned honestly & unambiguously. If Leave had offered a clear, unitary, achievable prospectus then 52% would mean something.
But they didn't. Leave *deliberately* set out to reel in voters by playing to a wide range of different and mutually incompatible expectations. That's how they cobbled together 52%.
You don't get 100% of what you want, Gove, because you didn't campaign honestly for it. You certainly didn't 52% support for your own personal vision of Brexit.
Gove is the lowest of the low. Utterly contemptible, conniving scum.
Gove (and the wider Vote Leave campaign that he proudly co-fronted with "Boris" Johnson) deliberately stoked a mood of anger & anti-intellectualism that now makes rational political discourse almost impossible... Absolutely unforgivable the damage he has done to this country.
People remember Gove's comment about experts but (in a similar vein) this one was even more outrageous: comparing pro-Remain economists to Nazi scientists who smeared Albert Einstein.
