Disappointing number of left-leaning folk who seem to think the proper way to fight oppression is to ignore it. It’s easy to ignore oppression when it doesn’t affect you.

This is what concerns me so much about the Hashtag Resistance. It’s so rarely like a real resistance at all.

Like, what are folks waiting for? Something so dreadful that society merely grinds to a halt and you’ve no choice but to take to the streets?

I mean, it’s not gonna be like in the movies. And most of the “something so dreadfuls” are going to be targeted at already marginalized and minority ppl.

So if you’re sitting around waiting for when things get so bad that the majority/non-marginalized folks start getting carted off, you’re waiting for when it’s already #toolate.

Hashtag Resistance folks want protest to be comfortable. They want it to be easy. They want it to be convenient.

For as much as y’all invoke Dr. King, you oughta read something he wrote besides just cherrypicking from the nice speech he gave before somebody SHOT HIM.

Comfortable protest is just advertising.
Convenient protest is just advertising.
Polite protest is effing ADVERTISING.

You might as well slap a “TM” on it.

Effective protest is uncomfortable by nature. It’s inconvenient. It’s not necessarily loud, but it’s difficult to ignore.

If you think you can make an effective protest that doesn’t disrupt, you’re mistaken. The very POINT is disruption of an unjust status quo.

How do you do that without making someone angry/uncomfortable/inconvenienced?

If the only thing you have to add to the conversation is lamenting aloud some perceived demise of “civility,” please know YOU’RE NOT HELPING. You’re actively hurting.

If hurt is all you have to offer, then *politely* excuse yourself from the conversation and go scream into a cake or something. You’re literally useless right now.

Inconvenience a bigot. Make a white supremacist uncomfortable.

You don’t really want to be the guy that racists feel safe around, do you? Do you?
