Breaking: I obtained body-camera footage of @MiamiDadePD officers punching a man & binding his arms and legs after pulling him over for what they said was littering. Prosecutors later said that the officers lied on reports, but no one has been disciplined: miaminewtimes.com/news/miami-dad…
Much of the footage here is difficult to watch — after punching the man, MDPD officers shout "Fucking right I did!" & "What are you going to do about it?" Later on, the man, Ephraim Casado, screams in agony as he's pinned & his arms are twisted behind him miaminewtimes.com/news/miami-dad…
In another portion of the clip, a cop turns directly to the camera and says "Don't say anything, the cameras are rolling." miaminewtimes.com/news/miami-dad…
MDPD Internal Affairs cleared the officers here of wrongdoing. While Miami-Dade's prosecutor's office even wrote in a close-out memo that the cops were "less than truthful" on reports, the State Attorney's Office also has charged no one miaminewtimes.com/news/miami-dad…
Oh, and let's not forget that Miami-Dade @MayorGimenez vetoed the creation of a civilian-oversight panel last February after MDPD's director said there is "no widespread mistrust" of his department and the panel was "not needed" miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2018/0…
Also this officer literally turns to a cop with a live body camera and says "Don't say anything, the cameras are rolling" as Casado screams in the background miaminewtimes.com/news/miami-dad…
New: Docs show MDPD and prosecutors weighed whether to discipline any of the cops here for perjury. State Attorney's office backed off due, in part, to inaccuracies in their own reports and also due to some pushback from MDPD, among other factors miaminewtimes.com/news/mdpd-kath…
Breaking: Miami-Dade County Police Director Juan Perez has called a 6 p.m. press conference to discuss this case miaminewtimes.com/news/miami-dad…
So: MDPD Director Perez stuck pretty much verbatim to the Internal Affairs memo discussed here clearing his cops of wrongdoing. That memo leaves out at least one major discrepancy b/t reports & body-cam video: miaminewtimes.com/news/mdpd-kath…
Asked about why the officers wrote Casado was "concealing his hands" when his hands were acually in the air, Perez said that would be up for a civil court to decide & that he wasn't going to re-litigate what his officers wrote, even though that was kinda the point of the presser
Perez did agree that *if* the prosecutors' memo was true, that would have been perjury, a "serious crime." But he stuck to MDPD's Internal Affairs memo clearing his employees
Also want to point out that before the presser started, a few, ahem, "legacy" reporters were "joking" that it seemed like the defendant here deserved to get beaten up. (They know who they are.) If you don't feel like criticizing power then retire & make way for someone who does.
Our recap of MDPD Director Perez's comments last night dismissing a prosecutor's memo that accused his cops of lying — Perez also said he did not believe the body-cam footage in this case showed excessive force miaminewtimes.com/news/miami-dad…
