BIG NEWS: Court rejects Medicaid work requirements in Kentucky. Protects 100,000 people from "arbitrary and capricious" punishment.

I'm guessing you've see a lot of bad news this week. This is very good news.

But its not over. More soon. Follow if interested.
Just finished reading opinion and talking to the former KY governor and several lawyers. Astounding. Will tweet soon. 2/
First, the context: Trump wants people who don’t work or see reduced hours to lose access to Medicaid.

Only about 6% of Medicaid recipients don’t work. This is just a path to cutting people from coverage.

KY went first with 90,000 people, most of whom work, cut from Medicaid.3/
While they denied it was why they were doing it, Kentucky’s plan was to save them money and separate “less deserving” people from cutting care. 4/
The Court slammed the Trump Administration accusing them of complete “sleight of hand”: They can talk til their blue in the face about “getting people to work” and “improving their wellness,” but they are subverting the purpose of Medicaid by STICKING POOR PEOPLE WITH BILLS. 5/
Here is the ruling: ecf.dcd.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/show_p…

It is a strong affirmation of the purpose of Medicaid.

OK so now what? 6/
The Administration says it will confer with the Dept of Justice. My read is this will be hard for them to remedy.

Governor Bevin previously issued an EO threatening he will end Medicaid expansion for 400k if he lost the case. You know, like a threat. Or, exactly a threat. 7/
Those 400,000 people are also 400,000 voters so we’ll see. People in Kentucky aren’t so sure. He’s first going to appeal first while he keeps the threat alive. 8/
Other states (Arkansas— per my @Politico debate last week), Michigan and Ohio are in the process of rolling out the same things as Kentucky.

This ruling is likely to have an impact.9/
Yes, the courts are getting more politicized. But this is a victory for at least 100,000, possibly millions & for justice & fairness.

As these same requirements are considered for SNAP & other basics, it may just be a blow against an Administration indifferent to poverty./end
