Trump is the least important person in the shutdown battle.

Schumer and Pelosi aren’t really battling him - though he very much thinks they are.

That’s the funny part.

He thinks he’s the towering general locked in a war against the leaders of the opposing army...

In reality, Chuck and Nancy are using Trump’s battlefield incompetence to not just win this battle but also break his control of his forces.

Trump is a buffoonish despot but he hasn’t truly lost a battle of wills with Democrats decisively.

He hasn’t gotten routed.

Even when Trump hasn’t gotten his way, the cost to individual Republicans has been far less than the cost would have been if they had bucked Trump’s will and invited his wrath.

Trump thinks he’s waging a war of will. He thinks his refusal to yield will ultimately prevail.

Just to take this one step further...

Worth noting that federal prosecutors chose to make public an indictment which has little prosecutorial value on its face (since Veselnitskaya is out of reach).

There’s a method to this madness and it may well be...

1) Shining a spotlight on the Trump Tower meeting about “adoptions”

2) Putting into the public domain evidence that Junior, et al, were indeed meeting with the Kremlin by proxy

3) Providing corroboration of the criminal quid pro quo alluded to in Paul Manafort’s mtg notes

4) Establishing that all attendees fully knew what the Russian objectives were in supporting the Trump Campaign

5) Providing a supporting indictment of the foreign actor in the Trump Tower meeting in advance of Mueller indicting Junior for lying to Congress about the mtg.
