The #NATOSummit is next week. This is an opportunity to present some recent academic scholarship on alliances/coalitions, which has drastically evolved in the last 15 years from the classic "origins of alliances/alliances as causes of war" debates. THREAD
Self-promotion first: my own research has dealt with junior partners in coalition warfare(press.georgetown.edu/book/georgetow…), diplomatic practices in #NATO (journals.sagepub.com/eprint/SMCkN8W…)&the "selective emulation" of allies that comes with fighting alongside them (tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…) 1/
On top of that, @AlicePannier and I have looked at the role of institutions in fostering the convergence of defence policies (tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…). @FCoticchia et al. have also studied "learning from others" in coalition warfare (journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.117…) 2/
. @AlicePannier has also looked at the working of bilateral defense coop (tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…) and lessons learned mechanisms between allies (defense.gouv.fr/content/downlo…). 3/
For a general overview of the challenges of coalition warfare, see @kjmcinnis1's article: (link.springer.com/article/10.105…). In coalition warfare, caveats are an important issue, and the book by @smsaideman and Dave Auerswald is a must-read: press.princeton.edu/titles/10149.h… 4/
For more work caveats, see these articles by Steve (tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…) and Marius Frost-Nielsen (tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…) 5/
State participation to multinational military interventions is an important question anyways. On this, there are for example the books by @svhlatky (global.oup.com/academic/produ… and mqup.ca/going-to-war--…), and by @patrickamello (palgrave.com/de/book/978113…) 6/
For the US perspective on multilateral interventions, the books by @sekreps (amazon.com/Coalitions-Con…) and Stefano Recchia (amazon.com/gp/product/080…), and the article by @mephenke (marinahenke.com/uploads/1/0/8/…) are must-read 7/
The proper role of multilateral institutions is also important to elucidate. See article by @stenrynning (academic.oup.com/ia/article-abs…) and the book by Weitsman (sup.org/books/title/?i…). @DijkstraHylke's book looks at IOs (taylorfrancis.com/books/97813172…) ... 8/
And there is also a very interesting forum on multinational rapid response mechanisms edited by @YfReykers and Karlsrud (tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…), as well as the book by @drhhardt (global.oup.com/academic/produ…). 9/
When it comes to defence cooperation, technological integration is important. On this topic, see this edited volume (sup.org/books/title/?i…), the article by Luis Simon (tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…) and the one by @DanielFiott (tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…) 10/
Recently, there has been interesting work on how NATO changes and adapts (might come in handy after the summit), especially the books by Seth Johnston (amazon.com/How-NATO-Adapt…) and @drhhardt (global.oup.com/academic/produ…) 11/
For a fresh take on alliance entrapment, see this paper by @ALanoszka (tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…). And there is much exciting work coming up by @mephenke on financial incentives for allies to join an intervention, or @sb_moller on coalition warfighting 12/
I'll stop because this thread is already too long. I apologize to those I may have overlooked, and I know I am not mentioning recent work on important issues such as alliances in Asia or post-soviet space, or EU defence cooperation (on which there is excellent research) 13/
But I hope this gives a sense of the current breadth of research on alliance and coalition warfare by Western countries. Plenty of great research, and much to chew on in advance of the #NATOSummit if you are bored by the takes on Trump and the 2%. END
