’A gentleman from this country being introduced to the Liberator, and about to extend his hand, was suddenly stopped, as O'Connell withdrew his hand, saying: "Pardon me, sir; but I make it a rule never to give my hand to an American without asking if he is a slaveholder."
‘The gentleman answered good-naturedly: "No, Mr O'Connell, I am not a slaveholder, but I am willing to discuss the question of slavery with you."

When I was small I thought Stan Lee (born Stanley Leiber) must have been the greatest — or at least the most prolific — writer ever, given all the comics he wrote. Later lawsuits suggested things were a bit more complicated. A gifted self-publicist and judge of artistic talent,
Lee was part of the “work-for-hire” system which saw young artists sign away their creations for a pittance. Stan would give an artist a sketchy plot and — once they’d finished drawing 20 pages of story — Stan added dialogue and claimed he wrote the whole thing.
For the three-part 1966 Fantastic Four saga, where an angelic herald selects the Earth as the next meal for the planet-eating celestial giant Galactus, Stan’s entire initial creative input had reputedly been to give Jack Kirby (born Jacob Kurtzberg) with the four word instruction

It's not well known that the congregation of the First African Baptist Church in Richmond donated approximately $40 towards Irish Famine Relief in 1847. Around 2,000 members of the congregation were slaves, and only 150 were free.
Instead of thanking this impoverished and enslaved community for their generosity, the Irish American Boston Pilot newspaper used this story to mock British philanthropy and essentially argue that it was proof that the Irish had it “worse” than slaves.
Thirteen years later the same newspaper argued that the abolition of slavery would be a terrible mistake as "by overstocking the market of labor [it would] do incalculable injury to white hands.”
