3/ The Trump administration has used the violence of the MS-13 gang to justify massive changes in the immigration system. In last week’s Hate Report, we highlighted studies disproving the narrative that increased immigration leads to increased crime. revealnews.org/blog/the-hate-…
4/ But we were still curious, how much violence is MS-13 actually responsible for? Turns out, that’s a surprisingly tough question to answer, especially since that violence has gotten so much public attention.
5/ We reached out to the Justice Department, the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the FBI, the U.S. Marshall Service, the White House and ICE, but none of them were able to provide data about the number of murders committed by MS-13, or the immigration status of suspects.
6/ The only figures we could find are maintained by the Center for Immigration Studies, a deeply controversial nonprofit group that advocates for cracking down on immigration across the board. revealnews.org/blog/the-hate-…
7/ Even though the government doesn’t seem to be collecting data on this, @propublica reporter @hannahdreier notes that MS-13 is an ideal foia for an administration intent on linking immigrants and crime.

9/ Last week, an alt-right protest in Portland by the groups Patriot Prayer and the Proud Boys descended into violence, with demonstrators beating counter-protesters with wooden poles and PVC pipes.
10/ The event led to numerous hospitalizations, including one police officer. One reporter covering the event said the level of violence he witnessed was unprecedented.

13/ In 2005, Congress passed a resolution apologizing for the institution’s failure to pass anti-lynching legislation. But, over a decade later, lynching is still not considered a hate crime at the federal level. washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content…
