I often see Ethereum dapps hand wave their explanations when asked about how they’re going to scale.

This is fundamentally WRONG. /1
While it may feel easy to outsource scaling to the brilliant teams working on L1 scaling solutions at the foundation or L2 at private firms like @omise_go or @statechannels, that simply won’t do. /2
Dapp founders should be playing an active role in understanding how these technologies work in an applied manner, and how it will require their architectures to evolve over time /3
For instance- I was initially very excited about multi party state channels for @ethBounties, but later learned the applicability is actually minimal if we used the same structure as currently. Scaling the dapp requires a change in the way it works at its core. /4
This is why we’re looking to move to an architecture which avoids mainnet txns at all. Decentralized info sharing on something like a @loomnetwork, and p2p payments using state channels or Plasma Cash, all backed by a stake that sits on mainnet incase shit hits the fan. /5
Most applications only need a sliver of their user journey to be on the main chain- everything else can live on more easily scaled “networks” that provide guarantees based on what’s at stake. /6
While it may please some teams to wait for a fully scaled, Turing complete Ethereum, this is both irresponsible and naive. It puts undue pressure on these protocol teams and does a disservice to your users who now have to wait for ETH to scale. /7
Many dapps could scale in the intermediate term but are avoiding the overhead and complexity of doing so because it’s easier to simply say “we’re waiting”. I’d like to hear more people calling out this BS opinion, and taking responsibility for their application roadmaps. /8
Dapps should be built in service to their users and no one else. If your users are paying high gas fees, it’s YOUR responsibility to search for solutions. /9
This is something we’re actively thinking about at @ethBounties— so that we can bring scalable p2p economies to Ethereum sooner than “whenever sharding is ready”. If any other dapps out there are facing these issues head on and want to chat, my DMs are open /fin
Relevant: thank based @VitalikButerin for waving his magic wand and scaling all Ethereum dapps in perpetuity
