At first the quote from #HenryCavill regarding #metooMVMT just annoyed me because it reinforced the ridiculous notions I hear constantly from men and trivializes the lived experience of people who have bravely spoken up...

...but here is the OTHER thing that is annoying. The way the media talks about the #metooMVMT in relation to men whose sexual misconduct has been exposed. We all know language matters. Look at this language from the article on #HenryCanvill
#metoo has SNARED...
“Brought down...”
“...careers DESTROYED...”
“...SINGLED OUT...”
These headlines and quotes are just a few. I’m sure if there was actual research done there are hundreds more like this. I wish I could really make mainstream media understand how dangerous this language and posturing is for survivors of sexual violence and harassment. #metooMVMT
The #1 complaint I hear is that #metooMVMT is a witch hunt like there is some master hit list we are checking off as we ‘take out’ man after man. It’s so FALSE! But people believe what they READ! So if they are reading about ‘take downs’ and ‘snares’ that becomes the narrative
The fact is these people brought THEMSELVES down with their own behavior. The movement is about people owning their truth and releasing the shame associated with sexual violence. That is not a NEW concept. What’s new is that there is some accountability now.
Women have been speaking up for years about harassment and abuse. #metoo has just created cover for those who didn’t feel safe enough to speak up. The movement didn’t *create* the concept of speaking out. it just allowed people to hear us better as a chorus and not a solo.
And be clear there are still MILLIONS of people around the world who are still silent. Who STILL don’t feel safe enough to share their experiences and the mischaracterization in the media is a DISSERVICE to them.
Our work is about supporting survivors by providing resources for healing and action. If in the course of that process a perpetrator is held accountable for their actions - so be it. But our goal is not to ‘take down’ individuals it’s to dismantle systems that give them cover.

A year ago today I thought my world was falling apart. I woke up to find out that the hashtag #metoo had gone viral and I didn't see any of the work I laid out over the previous decade attached to it. I thought for sure I would be erased from a thing I worked so hard to build. +
I remember calling my friends frantic and trying to figure out what to do. I didn't know whether to go online and say - THIS ALREADY EXISTS! Or to just let it go, but then I realized letting it go wasn't an option in this moment.
Enter - the Sisters. Black women who knew my work and supported me over the years raised up in arms - namely @bevysmith @BritniDWrites @Luvvie @KWestSavali @MyBrownBaby @fiyawata @afrobella and many more! They activated a network and the support came from everywhere.

What we witnessed yesterday in this moment was immediately recognized by women everywhere. It’s in your face but subtle, it’s demeaning but ‘a joke’, it’s love from an elder but it’s an abuse of power. So many of us are so conditioned that we saw it, cringed and moved on. #metoo
When I lived in Selma I met many elders from the Movement. They almost *always* found a way to hold me close or squeeze me in some way. I started calling it the Civil Rights hug.
Some of y’all know just what I mean.
Anyway, I won’t go on and on. I’m glad folks called it out and there is discussion about ALL of the misogyny we witnessed yesterday. I’m just gonna add...this is why we have to dig into sexual violence in our community openly and honestly from all sides. #therearelayers

I’ve said repeatedly that the #metooMVMT is for all of us, including these brave young men who are now coming forward. It will continue to be jarring when we hear the names of some of our faves connected to sexual violence unless we shift from talking about individuals [+]
...and begin to talk about power. Sexual violence is about power and privilege. That doesn’t change if the perpetrator is your favorite actress, activist or professor of any gender.
And we won’t shift the culture unless we get serious about shifting these false narratives.
My hope is that as more folks come forward, particularly men, that we prepare ourselves for some hard conversations about power and humanity and privilege and harm. This issue is less about crime & punishment and more about harm and harm reduction.

The purpose of #NotAllMen is to silence all women.
If that seems extreme to you, then you're 1) a dude, and 2) not familiar with how often this retort is used.

Let's unpack it.
A woman makes a general statement about a negative way men behave, or she talks about a specific example. "This guy did X..."

A man interjects and tells her, "Not all men behave that way or do X."

Factually, this may be accurate, but this man's purpose is not to enlighten.

Several men have expressed concern that they might be falsely accused of rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment, or sexual misconduct going forward due to the #MeToo movement. I thought I would share these helpful tips...
1. Stay alert and aware at all times. If you are at a party with a woman who you think will falsely accuse you of sexual assault, limit your alcohol consumption.

She is free to drink, but your impaired judgment is not an excuse for her false accusations.
2) If you walk or jog for exercise, try to vary your route and time on the street. To be predictable is risky. Always carry your cell phone to provide contemporaneous corroboration that you did not rape anyone. In fact, consider working out indoors. Some step aerobics, maybe.

1) A friend posted that he wanted facts to understand why these immigrants claim to be seeking asylum. Said he understood them to be coming to the U.S. seeking more opportunities. As a teacher of immigrants, I had facts to offer. Please read & RT #ImmigrantChildren #Immigration
2) Teens who make it across the border are literally carved up. Chunks of their bodies gone, knifed from their flesh, for refusing to join gangs. Gangs kill their siblings, to make clear they'll do it, then force a gun into kid's hand. "You kill this person, or we kill you."
3) Kid says no, gets chunk knifed out of their body, & gets told, "We'll be back to give you another chance to use this gun. Think hard." Kid doesn't want to kill; kid doesn't want to BE killed, so kid finds a way to get across the border & seek asylum.

people mean well but saying "if you're mentally ill, reach out" is just... I see it from other MI people too. But like, we know the hotlines exist, we know we have doctors.
not saying don't share resources with people, but it all just feels very simplistic tbh. even if you can, phoning a hotline isn't necessarily helpful for many people anyway.
I wish people would realise that even with therapy, meds, supportive family and friends, psychs, hotlines, etc., many of us are still going to be very mentally ill.
