Trump is in the very worst position for a narcissist: competing narcissistic impulses.
He very much wants to embrace Putin because that would make his illegitimate election seem somehow less so.
Yet, that coziness actually makes him look weak (as it did yesterday).

These kinds of situations short-circuit a narcissist. Makes them spin in circles doing irrational, contradictory things.
He'll lurch back and forth between saying he's being tough on Russia and insisting Russia is a friend undeserving of that toughness.
