Alright, alright, alright y’all, I’m gonna sign off here for the week. Thank you all for being kind and listen to me ramble about my research, human rights, language and tides.

Earlier in the week I shared some little graphics looking for people to participate in my research here in Finland. I'm still reall eager to hear from anyone who thinks they might be Abe to help, or who knows someone who might be able to help.
Keeping that in mind, a very kind translator friend ran up these two graphics in Swedish and Finnish for me so that they might have a wider reach! Feel free to copy, paste, share! Also, as ever, DM are open on my personal account @GaRoDean

Today is my last day on this account. It’s been an *interesting* week to be in Helsinki. It’s an interesting time to be a PhD candidate who’s focus is minority rights.
I did a masters in International Human Rights Law in Åbo. I’m very glad to have learned so much about human rights in a country so dedicated to upholding common human rights and facilitating peace.
It was here in Finland that I was inspired to pursue a PhD in minority language rights. I had seen so many comparisons between the status of Irish in Ireland and the status of Swedish in Finland and I found it so interesting.

I was recently made aware of comments by a Finnish politician about our referendum. I didn’t hear about it at the time (after the vote, I had to catch up on 3 months of sleep)
A Finnish friend was really upset and wanted me to know that this didn’t represent Finland.
I believe many of the Finnish government came out to say something similar, that this wasn’t an official line. To be honest, they need not have done so.
Because I knew that those opinions don’t represent Finland. Finland is a country with many flaws. But for someone who lived almost all her life in a country that has historically and consistently degraded women, Finland is a feminist state.

Today is the 46th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. I’m here because of abortion. Because women in my family were able to get the abortions they needed, legal and not, and move forward with their lives. Just like I was. I’m always thankful for abortion.
Abortion isn’t a new medical procedure. It’s been around as long as pregnancy has. Only in the last 150 years or so has it been criminalized. Pills and herbs that promised to bring back the menses were advertised and shared. It’s not new.

This is why I get very irritated when white people say abortion is worse than slavery or is Black genocide. First off, it’s simply not, and the way this country refuses to address how slavery built this nation and how its legacy lives on is appalling.

I'm in a room where Conservative members are debating policy resolutions around immigration (also, defence and democratic reform.) Will be offering a few updates. This meeting will decide which resolutions go forward to the main floor tomorrow.
The first one to come up is this, on irregular border crossings. For all the vigour around immigration, this policy basically doesn't call for Ottawa to do anything that different than what is currently being done.
Another one. Michelle Rempel gets up to say, yup, this is basically party policy. A member goes to the mic to contend that changing the language in the Safe Third Country Agreement really ain't gonna change much. (FYI, underlined text is the modification.)

You are allowed to ask. You don't have to mind-read beforehand to make sure the answer will be yes. You don't have to swallow everything you want or like or need. Sure, it's possible the answer will be "no," but you can prepare for that possibility. It's not wrong to ask.

As the #USS dispute goes on, it's clearer than ever that the institutions that govern our pensions have been failing us in multiple ways. They are secretive, non-transparent, marked by conflicts of interest and revolving doors. We need to open up and #DemocratizeUSS.
Of the 5 “independent” Trustees of #USS, 4 have a background working for investment and financial services companies, the 5th used to work for Rio Tinto, the mining company, running their gold mines in Papua New Guinea.
