This morning I thought to myself, "If I ever hear a sermon in which injustice toward indigenous peoples is mentioned, I will react by bawling my eyes out."
Today, my pastor preached on racial reconciliation.
He uttered the word indigenous, and I lost it. 1/
I simply want to tell you some of the things he said, so that you can hear them like I did, like we're in church, like we're listening to someone share the Gospel.

"I cannot say I love people if I do not care about the policies that affect them." 2/
"How am I actually moving toward 'the other' in peace?" 3/
"I grew up with a personal, very individual view of Christianity...but we are a part of something much bigger."

I've been struggling a lot with this lately. We have individualistic faith, not communal, and we criticize communal cultures who aren't like us. 4/
He shared this beautiful quote from Fred Rogers, who shared these words at a commencement speech:

"We are intimately related. May we never pretend we're not." 5/
I'll end with this:

"You gotta do more work to let the gospel in when you're a person of privilege."

Then I wrote in my journal a note to my partner as I looked around the room:
"People are uncomfortable."

That's a good start.

Thanks for coming to church with me. ///
