Penis stretching, wrist enlargement, eyebrow botox, “neck training,” nostril shrinking, steroid use and 3D-printed skull implants are among a long list of desired procedures and “coping strategies” discussed at length on male “looksmax” websites. huffingtonpost.com/entry/incels-l…
“Rate my face.” “Dropped 7K on a nose job.” “Worthy of blond girl?” “No Tinder matches in first 24 hours - is it over?” Thousands of men and teenage boys who are unhappy with how they look are joining anonymous “looksmax” forums.
Lookism — discriminatory treatment of unattractive people — is real, and its effects on men and women are well-documented. But to radical incels, it represents something deeply sinister.
More than ever, the pressure to look perfect is taking a toll on both and women and men, sometimes resulting in body dysmorphia and shame. But it has sparked a distinctly masculine response from the radical incels who frequent these online looksmax communities: violent rage.
Many incels’ notion of what is attractive is much like their quest for self-improvement: skin-deep. In the minds of radical incels, sexual rejection is a hate crime that justifies violence against women.
Posts from men who say they dream of “going ER” ― a reference to Elliot Rodger’s 2014 killing spree ― are common in incel and looksmax forums.
In April this year, a man rammed a van into a crowd of pedestrians in Toronto, killing eight women and two men. The suspect, 25-year-old Alek Minassian, wrote a post on Facebook shortly before the massacre, declaring the “Incel Rebellion has already begun!”
By comparison, zero women have gone on murderous rampages inspired by rejection. huffingtonpost.com/entry/incels-l…
