Why was there such a big opportunity under the traditional launch provider pricing umbrella for SpaceX? The answer is the traditional providers did not think demand would increase if they lowered price. SpaceX invested to lower price (eg reuse) because Musk wants to go to Mars.
Bezos knows that it will take time and is uncertain whether lower rocket launch costs increase demand so he is investing in new markets like passengers. He has patient capital and is proceeding step by step. bloomberg.com/news/features/…
Bezos selling the ride to potential space tourists: "The crew capsule has a half-dozen large windows, so its astronaut-tourists will have a fantastic view of the gentle curvature of Earth." This is new demand that expands the existing commercial satellite launch TAM of ~$5.5B.
