OK, since it's #NorfolkDay and I'm feeling it all over, here's my personal Top Ten Things To See & Do In England's greatest county, Norfolk. THREAD!
10. NORWICH. It's (arguably) got more well-preserved medieval buildings that anywhere else in England. More importantly, it's *said* to have a pub for every day of the year. You can't miss @NorwichCastle, @Nrw_Cathedral, Tombland, Elm Hill, the @NorwichLanes and more...
9. WALSINGHAM. You may not be the religious sort, but this town used to be one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the country, and crowds are drawn to this day. Come for the ruins of the medieval abbey and the shrine, stay for the very, very distinct atmosphere.
8. GREAT YARMOUTH. Ignore the reputation, the town's coming back, and it's hiding a few gems. Check out the @timetidemuseum, the Toll House, the remnants of the town's walls (a surprising amount, really) and have some world-class fish and chips.
7. ST BENET'S ABBEY. One of the few abbeys not dissolved by Henry VIII, nonetheless this monastic institution succumbed to time. Still, it's one of the great places to walk out to and sit on a sunny day, listening to the birds - and monastic chant from a special sitting bench!
6. CHURCHCRAWLING. Get in the car and put a church into your GPS. Odds are it'll take you to a medieval masterpiece, full of treasures that most people never get to see. The county has some of the best-preserved rood paintings out there.
5. CROMER. It's a relatively modern seaside resort, but man, you come here for some quality time on the beach and a plate of fresh crab at the end of the day. - as in, pulled out of the ocean an hour or two before. Perfecto.
4. RAMBLING. Norfolk is criss-crossed by walking paths that take you through some stunningly wild, beautiful and calming landscapes. There's also bugger all hills of any great consequence to worry about, if you were worrying.
3. STATELY VISITS. Norfolk is full of some of the country's most historic homes, from @blickingnt, birthplace of Anne Boleyn, to @HoughtonHall2, home of Britain's first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. Many have priceless art collections, and gardens to enjoy for hours.
2. GHOST HUNTS. Now, many of you know, I love ghost stories & Norfolk's full of them. Like, every village has some horrific spectral monk lurking. Norwich, Thetford and more run ghost tours all the time, and smaller places around Halloween. Great way to learn a little history!
1. EAT & DRINK LOCAL. There's hundreds of little microbreweries, distilleries and more across the county, each providing their spin on timeless, local recipes and methods. On my last visit to Norwich, I fell in love with @Redwellbrewing in Trowse - check it out!
So that's what this husky nerd loves doing when he gets the chance to return to God's own county, Norfolk - what do you like to do? @VisitNorfolk,if you ever want me to sell the place more, just ask! 🍺😎👍FIN
Sorry, that should be @BlicklingNT.
