The person who wrote the @nytimes how to have a "real conversation" about race op-ed is both a racist and an idiot. That is the extent of my interest in a "real conversation" with them.
"I'm not racist. I just have a Confederate flag on my car to honor dead people I never met, whose feelings matter more to me than actual living black people. Also, never talk to me about slavery. The lynching museum is rude."
"Taking a knee during the national anthem is disrespectful. Worse than actual police violence against black people, which I don't care about. Cops are great. It's Obamacare that's fascism!"
"I genuinely like and respect black people. I just don't care about their feelings. I also will vote for people who don't just advocate for policies destructive to them but who also openly insult them."
"Benjamin Lay, a Quaker 'hermit', known for 'action-statements', stood barefoot in the snow outside a Meeting House in order to dramatise the vulnerability of under-clothed slaves." quakersintheworld.org/quakers-in-act…
"(Lay) was disowned (expelled) from the Society, not for the truth of what he said, but for publishing criticisms of Friends who owned slaves. This was seen as an internal concern to be resolved within the Quaker family."
"In (John) Woolman’s journal (May 1757) he records how he decided tactfully to insist on embarrassing his Quaker slave-holding hosts on departure by paying the slaves for any services which they had rendered to him."
"Between the 1750s & the 1770s all the Yearly Meetings had concluded that slave-owning was incompatible with membership as Friends. By 1774, Quakers individually had to choose: it was a matter of disownment - they could no longer be Quakers if they continued to own slaves."
Basically 18th Century Quakers to 21st Century @nytimes "non-racists": "You ain't shit." (Though they'd put it more politely, I'm sure)
