"I've been here 350 years but you've never seen me. I represent sin, love, death, sex, hell, terror and other things too frightening for you to recognize."

#JamesBaldwin in a New Orleans church pulpit to a mostly white congregation, 1963
Also in 1963 photographer Steve Schapiro travelled through the South with #JamesBaldwin for LIFE Magazine, and took this photo of Baldwin in New Orleans, dancing with an unnamed CORE worker.
Baldwin's dance partner: CORE worker and Freedom Rider Doris Jean Castle.

Here is more about her: amistadresearchcenter.org/single-post/20…
One more thing ... in 1963 a New Orleans bookstore was raided by vice cops who seized #JamesBaldwin 's novel "Another Country." 1/5
Mayor Victor Schiro had called the book "filth" and tried to stop it from being sold in local stores. 2/5
Among those arrested was George DeVille, who later opened a beloved bookstore on Carondelet Street. At the time he was a 17-year-old book clerk.

DA Jim Garrison, who refused charges, is better known for his actions following another event that occurred later in 1963. 3/5
Walker Percy came to Baldwin's defense. Sort of. He didn't want Schiro deciding which books get rid. But he also called the novel a "tract of moral nihilism." 4/5
Finally the case was thrown out.

"People don't have any mercy. They tear you limb from limb, in the name of love."
#JamesBaldwin, in "Another Country"
(I meant to type "read" in number 4/5 but actually "rid" works better. )
