The React course saved us from shrinking our team. We’re self-funded. It’s incredibly hard to sustain one person working full-time, let alone 9 people. The crazy thing is that we’re going to grow now. I learned so much as a founder over the past year. Thread.
The biggest lesson I learned was to rely more on my team. Relying more doesn’t mean working less. It just means that I can shift to creating more. I will personally write more courses, and my team will increasingly contribute to the courses and products we build.
Always fix your own layouts, bugs and mistakes. Encourage a sense of ownership and helpfulness. Nobody is faster than you at your own work. Still, don’t be afraid to ask for help and Google the shit out of everything. Learn to give and humbly receive.
While it’s essential to follow your heart, you have to sync that to the heartbeat of the community. We focused too much on Swift and Sketch, and almost ignored other tools. This industry moves too fast to be fixated at one tool or language. Learn the best tools for your workflow.
Nurture your team’s passions, but think of them as long-term goals rather than short-term. Things are less scary when you start small. Want to make games? Learn JavaScript first, then slowly creep into design, 3D, then Unity. Don’t make impossible jumps.
Don’t be afraid to tell people what to focus on. As long as they understand your problems, they will try to fix them. Bare your soul. Clarity is your best friend and confusion is your worst enemy. You don’t need to know everything, you just need to do it.
