Massive red salute to a living legend now leaving us: Arsene Tchakarian, the last living member of the Missak Manouchian Group -- the communist immigrant partisan militia that fought the Nazi occupation of France during World War II -- has died at age 101.

Named after the Armenian communist who led it, Missak Manouchian, this partisan militia consisted of migrants to France -- Armenians, Jews, Spaniards, Italians, and others, all of whom were communists -- who picked up arms to fight the Nazis and their Vichy collaborators.
The Manouchian Group was officially called the Francs-tireurs et partisans – main-d'œuvre immigrée (FTP-MOI). It was the immigrant wing of the FTP, the resistance formed by the French Communist Party, which was the most powerful and best organized resistance to fascism in France.
Like Missak Manouchian, Arsene Tchakarian had fled Turkey after the Armenian Genocide, and moved to France, where he became involved in revolutionary leftist politics, and eventually the militant resistance against fascism.
