This this this. People didn’t not realize at the time that slavery or the pass system or residential schools or Jim Crow laws were bad, it just wasn’t a view held by the white patriarchy. Other people existed and cared and knew it was wrong all along.
This is exactly why perspective is key to historical narratives! History isn’t a series of names and dates and shit didn’t just happen. People did things. Others disagreed. There has never been monolithic opinions. White people just rarely cared about including BIPOC opinions
And for that matter actively erased them from history to propagate a narrative that European white men were the only ones who ever contribute to society culture science, whatever. Preventing people from participating and then erasing them doesn’t mean they didn’t contribute
