For the next five days I'm giving away two books I wrote, for free, because I want to figure out why they didn't sell. Were they lousy books? Or did I fail to market them correctly? All insight genuinely welcome. facebook.com/claire.berlins…
I want to figure this out before I publish my next one, because if the problem is "marketing," I need to learn how to do that better. If they were just lousy books--or books no none but a very narrow audience would find interesting--well, I wouldn't exactly call it "reassuring"--
--obviously, no writer lives for the words, "My, but that was a God-awful and boring book." But it would give me a sense of hope that my next book, which I've written for a wider audience, might yet sell.

In all the histrionic, hyper-partisan commentary about the Great Wall of Mexico, some eminently sensible points by @PeterZeihan don't get enough discussion.

I'll quote, because I think his argument has been painfully neglected:

"The Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts that form the bulk of the American-Mexican border regions are among the most dangerous, desolate regions of the planet. That makes it a good border–it is hard to cross.
"Would-be migrants have to make crossings in the deep desert. Dangerous, desolate areas with no towns also have another defining characteristic: no roads. Anyone who crosses the deep desert largely has to do so on foot, and a great many die trying.

This is a good introduction, in English, to the problem with the Gilets Jaunes. Owing to the domestic chaos in the US, it seems, Americans aren't hearing about any of this in the news, or so some tell me.
That in itself is surreal. It used to be that a story like this would make headlines. "Backed by Vladimir Putin, the far-right and far-left have joined forces in France violently to destroy the French Republic. Their only shared goal is to realign France with Russia."
That's really not an exaggeration, or sensationalism. But I do understand: Who has the bandwidth to think about France right now?

I agree completely with @NTenzer when he says that violence is consubstantial with this movement. It's not the word I would have chosen in English, but it's correct: the violence is now inherent; it can't be cordoned off or dismissed as "not truly representative."
Allowing them sack Paris once a week as a form of "legitimate democratic expression" is about as a good an idea as letting the Sturmabteilung and the Rotfrontkämpferbund have a regular go at each other and the police on the streets of Berlin.
The police should *never* be so undermanned that they're forced to retreat. They're there to enforce the law. No free nation can retreat from that and remain free.

So, about an hour north of us, we heard that a woman is giving away a 16-foot dock for free. Other mushers use docks for dog decks and play surfaces, so we’ve been keeping an eye out. This seems perfect. We called and it’s still available.
The catch? It’s on the bottom of such a steep hill that four other people have tried to take it, failed, and given up.
But they don’t have our secret super-pulling powers...

Three commonly held but untrue views seem to nicely summarize this "report":
1. Selling your goods below cost is a success strategy
2. Being "big" means you cannot be disrupted
3. Government wants to save us from "market power"
#1 only produces a return if one can then raise prices and still sell big volumes *and* no one else can enter the market. How can firms "protect" their staked-out market space? Without government privilege there's only one way: by offering goods of higher quality at lower prices.
So to be successful, either the firm produces better goods or they're more efficient (lower cost). Neither is much of a problem for consumers. And if they charge prices above what consumers think it's worth, both the good itself and the purchasing power of their money, they fail.

1/ So, the story of reverse engineering a Girard design starts with something one of my students brought to class one day: a water bottle. Specifically, this one:
2/ Anyone who knows or follows me would assume, correctly, that I'd be interested in knowing more about the design. I'm a sucker for serial geometric anything. So, off I head to the SIGG website, looking for bottles with Herman Miller patterns. No joy: must be discontinued?
