"I've asked my team to send me a list of EVERY AMERICAN PATRIOT who sends me money today." The mark for Trump's grift is the same as Bakkers...the lonely TV watcher who thinks their contribution just might get them closer to heaven or gain the approval of the big man up there.

Question for the news editors at the major networks. If you knew then what we know now about the Gulf of Tonkin incident, would you have broadcast this speech live? I think the answer is probably, "no way." Just keep that in mind tomorrow.
For those unfamiliar with this incident, it was the "attack" that LBJ used to justify ramping up US involvement in Vietnam. Later it became clear that LBJ's account of the attack was greatly distorted with the intent to deceive the American people. usni.org/magazines/nava…

1. The movement of people across borders is a constant in world history (though the rate and direction of movement has ebbed and flowed over time). This tweet, however, helped me see the urgent contemporary connection between current/future immigration policies & climate change.
2. Put most simply, the world can either strengthen & militarize borders to deal with coming climate migration (build walls), or they can engage in a collaborative process of rethinking how they want those borders to work, how porous they should be. The latter is very hard work.
3. The nation-state as an institution has in many ways been weakened recently, largely by the mechanisms of global capitalism, but I don't see many signs that nations will be disappearing any time soon. Thus, nations (possessing geographical borders) will continue to exist.

Though last week's discussion was fruitful and evocative, @i_nurmi points out that we skirted around and didn't really arrive at the ultimate question of why these classes are important, and how we convince our students these are important.
A big problem here is the perception of Latin as a "prestige language." A cohort mentions a panel at CANE last year with pushback against Latin as ID'd as "prestige Latin"; one panel speaker gave e.g. of students finding value in the language *because* of this identity...

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether

Today, I wanna talk a little bit about @LunaVideoGame and what motivated us to create it. To begin - here is the very first page of the notebook I kept for the first year of the project. It is simple - but also probably the most direct explanation of our goals. (1)
In many ways, humans are sponges. Often, without realizing it, we take on the stories, attitudes and beliefs of the people around us, even when they are not helpful. Sometimes, when they are toxic. This can lead to a lack of self-esteem, self-reliance.... and self-advocacy. (2)
When we hurt inside, because of an attitude, experience or story that is self-denying, self-destructive it self-shaming ... it has so many long lasting effects. It takes away from our ability to believe we belong, we are enough, and are worthy of love. (3)
