An interesting story about security and human nature. TLDR: for the first decade or so of the McDonald's Monopoly contest, it was utterly impossible for the average customer to win any of the top prizes.

The dude hired to oversee the safe and secure handling of the super high-dollar prize pieces (Boardwalk etc) absconded with them. He started off by offering a prize to a friend in exchange for a cut of the money.
Once that worked out he got more methodical - looked for folks in a variety of states so the geography of the winnings would be randomly distributed.
Eventually, heventually hooked up with a mobster to whom he gave the winning game piece for a fancy car - in a weird twist of fate (karma?) the mobster in question died in a car accident not long after.
Eventually he got too greedy, told too many people, etc and the FBI got curious. The case got a decent amount of publicity at the time and might have been the trial of the century had it not started on 9/10/2001 and been utterly eclipsed in the news cycle the next day.
