1. @Scholastic We are a group of Florida Native teens, ages 15-18. We endorse @debreese's proposal. You must realize that while the readers stories are touching and cover basics ideas of diverse representation and 'mirrors,' you still have a lot of work to do.
2. There has been a lot of talk about the book Stone Fox. We remember when that book was offered in a Scholastic book fair at our schools. The memory of reading that book causes some of us panic and depression.
3. This lesson plan is on your website. Why do you call SF 'the Native American?' Do you believe that is sensitive? We are very concerned with this statement: "using the prize money to buy back land *he feels* the white settlers have stolen from his people." Isn't that the truth?
4. Another lesson. "What if Stone Fox had not let Willy win?" You expect all children to think it is better if Willy has the money to save his settler farm than for Stone Fox to have the money to buy back stolen land. This makes Native kids feel our lives are less important.
5. @Scholastic We would also like to discuss this book cover to your popular 'What is/was...' series. The cover is not only offensive and humiliating to Native young readers, it's also factually inaccurate.
6. @Scholastic Do you know the Boston Tea Party Museum even says: "They were not dressed as Indians in the classic sense... rather they wore wool blankets matchcoat style, painted their faces with soot." Why are you perpetuating lies and stereotypes?
7. @Scholastic One more thing about Stone Fox. We just noticed this 'activity.' Deaf people use sign language. Why would you encourage students to make up fake signs? Do you think that's respectful? It's time to discard many of these books & ideas!
8. @Scholastic It is not enough to publish a few Native authors and keep all these harmful old books on the shelves. Even if they still sell, we are asking you to think about the connection between Native children being taught these books and our leaving school at an early age.
9. @Scholastic The only conclusion we can come to is that you don't believe Native children are dedicated readers in today's world. To introduce ourselves, we are Alexis, 18, Eduardo, 18, Michael, 17, Indigo, 16 and Charlie, 15.
10, @Scholastic Your books have influenced, for bad and good, our development for all of our lives. Please think of us when you create a lesson plan or book cover like the ones we tweeted.
