In this op-ed, former Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd pronounces Rupert Murdoch "the greatest cancer on the Australian democracy." I'd take that a step further: he's the greatest cancer on democracy on earth. Far more damage than Putin or Trump.

There's little question that Trump wouldn't be president if not for Fox. In fact, a brilliant, peer-reviewed study of the Fox effect found that if not for Fox, *George W. Bush* wouldn't have been reelected. Dubious? Read about it:

Rupert Murdoch's Fox has played a mind-bogglingly central role in radicalizing the GOP, whipping up anti-immigrant hysteria and racism, and cementing climate denial as Republican orthodoxy. And Murdoch-owned media have done similar things worldwide.
And, of course, Rupert Murdoch, through his media empire, played a crucial role in the US, UK, and Australia in building the drumbeat for the war in Iraq—one of the most sickening monstrosities of my and your lifetime.
Murdoch owns ~60% of Australian newspaper circulation, 40% in the UK, and the Wall Street Journal & New York Post—and Fox News. He injects a constant feed of toxicity into the arteries of political life of the US, UK, and Oz. Trump is merely one of Murdoch's hellspawn.

First of all, none of this is meant as criticism of the Observer or journalists involved: but I do think it’s an interesting case study in the way political journalism works
Downing Street are keen to build a narrative that they’re reaching out to the progressive centre, and the fact its on the front page of the Observer is part of that strategy and the story they want to establish

All the times the govt's own EU referendum pamphlet, delivered to every house, said that voting Leave meant "less access", "losing full access" & "uncertainty and risk" about the Single Market. But a majority voted Leave anyway.
