We need WAY more men in comedy to stand next to us in the #MeToo fight.
We don't need any more rape/assault apologists.
We've got plenty of those.
We don't need you to speak for us or tell us what we mean.
We need you to amplify us and call other men out on their shitty behavior.
BTW: you can take the "in comedy" out of the sentence and it would still be true.

There are so many reasons Cindy Hyde-Smith is wrong for Mississippi.

One of the reasons that just came to light is her long history of racism, starting with attending a segregationist high school to sending her daughter to a similar one as well. #SaturdayMorning
Hyde-Smith attended a segregationist academy specifically designed to avoid Brown v. Board of Ed racial integration.

Not only that, but she also sent her daughter to a similar academy.

This story is stunning.

I've been thinking about the "emergent" genre of perpetrator narratives in the wake of #MeToo. When I first proposed a postdoc on this topic (way back in 2015), it was a niche area of study, with few examples/texts.
With the recent surge of narratives, from Louis C.K's "apology" to Jian Ghomeshi's recent piece in the #NYRB, my initial research questions feel a little more pressing. Why do these narratives exist? What allows them such a vast reach? And what do we DO with these texts?
One of the things that I find so hard about #MeToo (and the history of hashtags around sexualized and gendered violence) is that while technological shifts have created new spaces for survivors to speak, so too has it created spaces for those who have used violence to speak.

B) I've known this woman for years, told me she was basically done with being a comic. She was tired of going up against the boys club...exhausted with being made to prove herself -- something successful male comics don't have to do -- after over 15 years in the biz..
C) Not sharing exactly how long she's been in the business because i don't want people guessing who it is. But as I read this message from her I got emotional because successful male comics don't ever have these thoughts. They don't feel beaten down by the business...

I've read several threads by black women about their experiences mirroring those of the woman with Ansari. They are gripping, brave, painful. They evoke the fear of reprisal & how sexual agency shifts.
I am not RTing because I don't want to encourage trolling.
But I thank them.
The fact is millions of women have had this experience precisely because we DO exert power over our own sexual agency. But that power ceases when the man chooses to ignore consent being withdrawn. The facile "just leave" narrative white women are pushing we've heard before.
For generations women have been told there's a point where they are no longer allowed to withdraw consent.
That narrative must end. For women to have true sexual agency and choice, men must assent to follow the rules and not impose their own or the threat of violence.

Very few people acknowledge that our entire culture was built on sexual violence and rape, especially of black and indigenous women. #MeToo
But people don't want to talk about intersectionality, so they ignore the foundational role of sexual violence toward black/indigenous women
Of course, widespread sexual violence toward women across the globe predates chattel slavery and settler colonialism..
