When talking about the March on Washington, besides Dr. King, there are two other people you should know about: Mahalia Jackson and Bayard Rustin.
During Dr. King’s speech, singer Mahalia Jackson shouted, “Tell them about the dream, Martin!" which led to King improvising his remarks to proclaim his dream of a nation where children are judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. 
Bayard Rustin, an openly gay man, was the chief organizer of the March on Washington. Dr. King’s had full confidence in Rustin -- and it led him to organize one of the most well-attended marches in our nation’s history.
