THREAD: I want to ask for your help today—please share and RT this 9/11 request. I wrote in 2016, for the 15th anniversary of 9/11, an oral history of being aboard Air Force One on September 11th. politico.com/magazine/story…
The reaction to that piece inspired me to expand it into a full book, exploring the American experience of 9/11 from dawn to night, which will be published next year by @simonschuster.
The reporting has been an incredible, emotional journey. I've gathered more than 500 stories from Americans across the country—firefighters in New York, mechanics at the Pentagon, schoolteachers in Arlington, state troopers in Shanksville, ...
... from Navy submariners at sea to air traffic controllers in Cleveland, from the mayor of Gandar to a Port Authority police officer trapped in the rubble of Ground Zero. ...
Together, they tell an emotional tale of a country surprised, but one that rose to the moment. Unspeakable tragedy, coupled with unbelievable bravery. I have stories from 2 a.m. to midnight, from nearly every corner of the country. BUT:
I'd love to add and hear *your* story. What do you remember about the day? Where were you? How did you find out? What did you think over the course of the day? Please share your story with me here: garrettgraff.com/911-stories/
What makes this story so incredible, so memorable, so important to understand, is that we *all* lived it. We all share the memory. The 9/11 story is *our* story. Please help me tell it—and tell me your story: garrettgraff.com/911-stories/
